Common questions

Where do the measurements come from?
Every number on this site is taken from the font file itself. We download each family and measure its outlines directly: x-height, cap height, stroke weight, stroke contrast, and average character width. Nothing is estimated and nothing is copied from another site.
Why measure fonts instead of describing them?
Words like 'clean' or 'modern' mean different things to different people. A measured x-height of 54% means the same thing to everyone, and it explains why one font looks bigger than another at the same size.
How are similar fonts chosen?
By comparing measurements within the same category. A serif is never suggested as similar to a sans, however close the numbers land. Matches are ranked by weighted distance across five measurements, with x-height counting most because it drives apparent size.
Are these fonts free to use commercially?
Everything here is from Google Fonts, which is open source and free for commercial use, including client work and products you sell. You can self-host them.
What do the project types mean?
Every curated pairing is tagged with the kinds of project it suits, and each tag gets its own page. Editorial is long-form reading: articles, essays, anything where someone reads several hundred words at a stretch. Luxury covers high-contrast, spacious typography for premium retail and hospitality. Portfolio is for showing work, where the type should frame the images rather than compete with them. SaaS is interface typography, built to stay legible at small sizes and in dense tables. Startup is marketing and landing pages that need personality without losing clarity. A pairing can carry more than one tag, so it may appear under several project types.
Do you cover paid fonts like Helvetica?
Not directly. Licensed fonts can't be shown or measured here. But there are pages suggesting free substitutes for the paid faces people search for most.
