About Compare Fonts
What this is
Compare Fonts is a free tool that compares fonts based on measurements, not just vibes.
Why it exists
Font recommendations are usually written as adjectives (clean, modern, friendly) which mean different things to different people and can't be checked. This site measures fonts instead. Every family is downloaded and measured from its own outlines, so "similar" means something specific and repeatable, defined the same way for every family.
How it works
Each font family is downloaded once and measured directly: x-height, cap height, stroke weight, stroke contrast, and average character width. Similar fonts are then ranked by weighted distance across those measurements, within the same category only. A serif is never offered as similar to a sans. Nothing is generated by a language model, and no rationale is written by a machine. See the guide for what the measurements mean.
How it stays free
The site is supported by advertising. Ad placements are limited and kept away from the specimens. An ad that gets between you and the type you are trying to judge is a bad trade for everyone, including us.
Corrections and requests
If a result looks wrong, or something you expected is missing, we want to know. Get in touch. Corrections are read and acted on.
